Sam Altman Announces GPT-5 Timeline Update, Cancels o3 As Standalone Model
OpenAI is going to do things a little differently from now on, says Altman.
OpenAI will ship GPT-5 in a matter of months and streamline its AI models into more unified products, said CEO Sam Altman in an update on Feb. 12.
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings, said Altman in an X post introducing several updates about the company's GPT and o series. Specifically, Altman says the company plans to launch GPT-4.5 as its last non-chain-of-thought model and integrate its latest o3 reasoning model into GPT-5.
The estimated timing for GPT-4.5 is a matter of weeks, and GPT-5 in a matter of months, Altman responded in a comment about the ETA.
OpenAI's previously comfortable position atop the AI throne has been challenged lately with the introduction of DeepSeek's reasoning model R1. The Chinese company reportedly made the model for a fraction of the price and offered it free of charge as a chatbot, and significantly cheaper than OpenAI models for API access. In addition to rocking the stock market, DeepSeek's arrival on the scene threw OpenAI and other AI companies' business strategy into question, proving AI models can be made cheaply and more accessibly.
Perhaps, Altman's announcement represents changing tack. Instead of demanding $200 a month for exclusive or early access to certain model features with its Pro plan the new strategy seems to be getting its products into as many hands as possible to beat the competition with market capture and user-friendly experience.
"A top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks," said Altman in the lengthy post. That means OpenAI won't ship o3 as a standalone model and will instead incorporate its reasoning abilities, which improves accuracy and is better for more complex problems, into GPT-5.

Legal AI Startup Harvey Lands Fresh $300 Million In Sequoia-Led Round As CEO Says On Target For $100 Million ARR
Harvey, a San Francisco AI startup focused on the legal industry, has raised $300 million in a funding round led by Sequoia that values the startup at $3 billion — double the amount investors valued it at in July.
The Series D funding round builds on the momentum of the three-year old startup, which was founded by a former lawyer and a Google AI researcher, and reflects investors’ enthusiasm for AI tools that have succeeded in making inroads with business customers.
In an exclusive interview with Fortune, Harvey CEO Winston Weinberg said the startup has surpassed $50 million in annual recurring revenue and estimated it would surpass $100 million ARR in about eight months. In 2024, the company said it expanded from 40 customers to 235 customers in 42 countries, including the majority of top 10 U.S. law firms.
Harvey uses large language models to help law firms and corporate legal teams streamline research, analyze contracts, and draft documents. “Legal work is incredibly complex and requires so much context, that a simple chatbot doesn’t work,” said Weinberg, who described his startup as developing a tool that offers suggestions and clarifications along the way, and allows lawyers to provide feedback about what they want.
Other investors in the company’s latest funding round include Coatue, Kleiner Perkins, OpenAI Startup Fund, GV, Conviction, entrepreneur Elad Gil, and REV, the venture capital arm of RELX Group which owns LexisNexis.
The market for AI apps in the legal industry has become crowded, with competitors including Casetext (which was acquired by Thomson Reuters), Andreessen-backed Eve, Spellbook, Robin AI, and Lex Machina (owned by Lexis Nexis). However, Weinberg argues that Harvey’s focus on hiring lawyers as domain experts and integrating them with Harvey engineers, has helped them get the most out of the AI models they use (which besides OpenAI include Anthropic’s Claude and models from Mistral and Xai).

Meta In Talks To Buy Korean AI Chip Startup Founded By Samsung Engineer
Meta is in talks to acquire South Korean AI chip startup FuriosaAI, according to people familiar with the matter, a deal that could boost the social media giant’s custom chip efforts amid a shortage of Nvidia chips and a growing demand for alternatives.
The deal could be completed as early as this month, one of the people said. Mark Zuckerberg’s company is one of several companies in talks to acquire FuriosaAI, said another person familiar with the matter. A FuriosaAI spokesperson declined to comment on the “speculation,” citing policy. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Seoul-based startup last raised funds just last week, when it received 2 billion won (about $1.4 million) from CRIT Ventures, a South Korea venture capital firm founded by Jaejoon Song, former CEO of online gaming company Com2us. A valuation for the company was not disclosed.
In total, FuriosaAI has raised about 170 billion won (about $115 million) in venture funding. Its early investors include South Korean internet giant Naver and Seoul-based DSC Investment. FuriosaAI was founded in 2017 and is led by June Paik, who previously worked at Samsung Electronics and AMD. As of the most recent public filing, Paik owned an 18.4% stake in FuriosaAI.
In August, FuriosaAI unveiled its RNGD chip, which was developed in partnership with Taiwanese custom chip maker Global Unichip Corp. “While cutting edge GPUs consume up to 1,200 watts, RNGD (pronounced “Renegade”) is designed to operate with a thermal design power (TDP) of just 150 watts,” FuriosaAI said in a blog post about RNGD. “This makes RNGD an ideal choice for large-scale deployment of advanced generative AI models like Llama 2 and Llama 3.” Llama 2 and Llama 3 are Meta’s publicly available large language models.

Hollywood Artificial Intelligence Pioneer Flawless Launches New Film Editing Tool
AI took another step into Hollywood today with the launch of a new filmmaking tool from showbiz startup Flawless. The product — named DeepEditor — promises cinematic wizardry for the digital age.
For movie makers, the tool offers photorealistic edits without a costly return to set.
Flawless has showcased several use cases. One transfers an actor’s performance from one shot to another. Another adds new dialogue while keeping the original scene. The character’s lip movements are synchronized with the updated words.
Users can also trim lines, insert pauses, and re-time delivery. Every edit is delivered in 4K resolution. The results have already hit the silver screen. One early test case was the survival thriller Fall, which was directed by Scott Mann — the co-founder of Flawless.
AI editing arrives in Tinseltown
Mann applied the software to clean up the movie’s dialogue. The first cut featured dozens of f-bombs, which were pushing Fall towards an R rating that would have severely restricted the audience. Those curse words had to go.
To replace them, Flawless first converted the actors’ faces into 3D models. Next, neural networks then analysed and reconstructed the performances. Facial expressions and lip movements were then synchronized with the new dialogue.
The experiment was a success. Fall secured a PH-13 rating and became a sleeper hit, grossing a reported $21mn against a budget of just $3mn. A sequel is now shooting in Thailand. The results convinced Mann to bring the tech to market, which led to today’s commercial launch of DeepEditor.
