The AI Start-Up That Will Revolutionize The Way Films Are Made
It’s a long way from Scott Mann’s home town of Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham, to his base in Los Angeles, California, in more ways than one.
What began with a love of 1980s blockbusters such as Back to the Future and making films on a camcorder starring schoolmates has culminated in directing Robert De Niro and scoring box office success in 2022 with Fall, a survival thriller.
Now Mann, 44, is embarking on what might be an even more challenging journey: the transition from film director to technology entrepreneur. He is co-chief executive of Flawless AI, a start-up building tools that apply artificial intelligence to film editing.
Using generative AI, its software allows film-makers to adjust and edit their work allowing, for example, actors’ lip movements to match scripts in multiple languages, or for original dialogue to be changed without the need for expensive reshoots.
The technology aims to deliver “perfectly lip-synced visuals”, ending the distracting and at times unintentionally comical viewing experience of dubbed films where the voices are alarmingly out of sync with the lines the actors deliver.

First Painting Created by a Humanoid Robot Clears Over $1 Million in Auction
The "artwork" sold for a pretty penny at Sotheby's auction house this week.
Who would want a painting made by a robot? I’m not sure, but whoever they are, they just spent an insane amount of money to buy it. “AI God,” is a painting that depicts famed cryptanalyst Alan Turing, and it was created by Ai-Da, who is described on her website as being an “ultra-realistic robot artist.”
The work, which was sold at Sotheby’s auction house in New York for over a million dollars this week, looks like this:
The Art Newspaper writes that after 27 bids, the lucky winner walked away with the painting, having forked over more than a million dollars.
You might find yourself wondering how it’s even possible that a robot can make a painting. Ai-Da’s website states that she is “capable of [both] drawing and painting using cameras in her eyes, AI algorithms, and her robotic arm.”

Yuval Noah Harari: ChatGPT Is The “Amoeba of AI Evolution”
“What's happening now in the world is tension between organic animals and an inorganic digital system which is increasingly controlling and shaping the entire world.” Part of existing as an “organic entity” such as a human is that we live our lives by cycles: Day, night. Winter, summer, Growth, decay. Sometimes we’re active, other times we need rest.
But algorithms and computers never need rest – they are ‘on’ all the time. In a world that is becoming increasingly more digital, humans are being forced to adapt to the “always on” schedule of these systems, says Yuval Noah Harari, the best-selling author of 'Sapiens' and ‘Nexus,’ while in conversation with Andrew Ross Sorkin.
Adapting to these schedules has made our lives more and more public, creating a life that mirrors “one long job interview,” says Harari, as any of our actions can be chronicled and follow us around for decades. At its crux, this is destructive to how we function.
Here’s how we got here, and how we can course-correct, according to the historian.
How Close Are We To An Accurate AI Fake News Detector?
In the ambitious pursuit to tackle the harms from false content on social media and news websites, data scientists are getting creative.
While still in their training wheels, the large language models (LLMs) used to create chatbots like ChatGPT are being recruited to spot fake news. With better detection, AI fake news checking systems may be able to warn of, and ultimately counteract, serious harms from deepfakes, propaganda, conspiracy theories and misinformation.
The next level AI tools will personalise detection of false content as well as protecting us against it. For this ultimate leap into user-centered AI, data science needs to look to behavioral and neuroscience.
Recent work suggests we might not always consciously know that we are encountering fake news. Neuroscience is helping to discover what is going on unconsciously. Biomarkers such as heart rate, eye movements and brain activity) appear to subtly change in response to fake and real content. In other words, these biomarkers may be “tells” that indicate if we have been taken in or not.
